MVB: Wildcats Surge Past Bears, James Mion Sets New Record.

Utica, N.Y - The SUNY Poly men's volleyball team got back to .500, after defeating the SUNY Potsdam Bears 3-1 at home. The Wildcats have now won four of their last 5 matchups, pushing their record to 12-12. Senior James Mion etched his name into the SUNY Poly record book after recording two solo blocks, giving him the school record with 67.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Behind strong performances from Jason Aubrey, Sean Murray and Peter Gottler, the Wildcats controlled much of the first set. The Bears fought back with powerful kills of their own, but could never string together enough to maintain momentum. The Wildcats strong play carried them to a 25-13 set win.

The Bears came out firing in the second set, building a 6-1 lead before the Wildcats would call a timeout. An impressive string of kills from James Mion and Jordan Weir narrowed the gap for the Wildcats, but it was not enough. SUNY Potsdam would win the set 25-21, evening the matchup at one set a piece.

Neither team could break away from the other in the third set, in what was a real back-and-forth affair. The largest lead in the set for either team was three points. With the score 22-22, the Wildcats would stand tall, scoring the final three points of the set to win 25-22.

The fourth set was another close one, but the Wildcats would power through to clinch the victory behind a 25-20 set win. History was made in the set, when Senior middle blocker James Mion, recorded two solo blocks, giving him the school record with 67.

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats continue their busy week of playing four games in six days when they square off against the MIT Engineers at home on March 28th. That game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
