MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Men's Lacrosse Team (2-6) picked up its second victory of the year in spite of steady rains on Wednesday, pulling away from the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (0-8) by a score of 10 to 6.
The Wildcats led by just one, 6-5, heading into the final quarter. The home team scored four straight in the period to put the game away, culminating in a pretty play involving an assist by Joey Beyer (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) from behind the net to find Neil Nembhard (Commack, N.Y. / Commack) for the score, giving the Wildcats a comfortable 10-5 lead with 4:20 to play.
SUNY Poly was paced by Nicholas Levanti (Clayville, N.Y. / New Hartford) with 3 goals. Beyer had one of his best games to date with a team-high 3 assists to go along with a score, and Andrew Wurz (Utica, N.Y. / Notre Dame) tallied 2 scores, an assist, and 5 groundballs.
Another key to the Wildcat victory was the faceoff game, with SUNY Poly winning 10 of 18, one of their better performances inside the circle so far. Shane Joswick (New York Mills, N.Y. / MVCC) did a nice job in that department while also grabbing a team-high 7 groundballs, and freshman Jagger Ashley (Stormville, N.Y. / Carmel) was 5 for 7 on face-offs during some key points in the second half.
The Dolphins were led by Germain Ngaba with 2 goals and an assist. The Wildcat defense did a nice job containing Ngaba, however, as Regan Seydler (Croghan, N.Y. / Lowville) recorded a game-high 3 caused turnovers to go with 5 groundballs. Senior Devin Muha (Walworth, N.Y. / Gananda) added a caused-turnover, although his biggest contribution may have come early in the game on the offensive end. The long-stick defender took the ball the length of the field less than five minutes into the game, and finished with a jumping shot from point-blank range to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. The play drew loud cheers from the Wildcat sideline, as Muha netted his first score of the season.
SUNY Poly will look to build some momentum as they head back into NEAC conference play. They travel to Wells this Saturday, April 11th, for a 2:00 pm matchup.
