MARCY, N.Y.- The SUNYIT Men's Lacrosse team (0-7, 0-2 NEAC) was unable to hold on to their early lead as they dropped a hard fought battle to NEAC foe Morrisville St. (8-2, 1-1 NEAC) 18-6.
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as a Jon Eguren (Vitoria, Spain / Cicero- North Syracuse) shot found the back of the net less than two minutes into the game. The Wildcats held strong until the Mustangs were able to go on a 4-0 run late in the quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the second.
The Mustangs tightened up their defense from there. The Wildcats got no breathing room on the offensive end as the Morrisville defensive unit stifled any Wildcat attack that came their way. The Mustangs offense was consistently able to find the net as they tacked on 5 second quarter goals to take a 9-2 lead into the break.
Halftime adjustments didn't prove to be enough as the Wildcats did what they could to claw their way back into the game. Another 4 goal quarter by the Mustangs had them comfortably ahead 13-3 as the teams entered the final quarter of play.
The Wildcats started to come alive late in the game. Senior attacker Adam Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y. / Johnson City High School) did his part to spark a comeback as he scored a spectacular goal after he was hit from behind. The hit didn't stop Reynolds as he was able to dive to the ground getting the shot off and beating the goaltender. That wasn't enough however as the Mustangs were able to hold down the Wildcats to take home the 18-6 victory.
Six different players scored for the Wildcats in the game. The Wildcats got great play in goal from net minder Jeffrey Melnik (Yonkers, N.Y. / Stepanic) as he recorded 14 saves on the game.
Morrisville St. was led by Louis Geswaldo who tallied 5 goals as well as John Sherlock who tacked on 4 of his own to go along with 2 assists.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday as they visit Mitchell in search of their first victory. The game is scheduled to be played at 4:00 pm.
