Men’s Basketball Home Opener Spoiled by Red Dragons

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Polytechnic Men's Basketball Team (2-5) ran up against a veteran Cortland State (7-0) team on Saturday, falling to the Red Dragons 75-49.

The Wildcats fared well on defense, holding the visitors to just 42% shooting and only 5-of-20 from three-point range. But SUNY Poly was unable to get anything going offensively, struggling from the field and from behind the line.

Ryan McCarthy (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) led the Wildcats in points with 11 but struggled with foul trouble, playing 27 minutes and attempting just 6 shots on the day. Kaleel Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y. / Syr. Acad. of Science) and Maverick Hodge (Bronx, N.Y. / Samuel Gompers) both finished with 10 points to provide most of the remaining scoring for the Wildcats. Johnson had a great day on the glass, finishing with 12 rebounds to record the game's only double-double.

The Red Dragons were led in scoring by rangy slasher Blair Estarfaa. The guard came off the bench to score 16 points, hitting on two of his three 3-point attempts and going 5-for-8 overall from the field.

Cortland held  a slight advantage in rebounding and turnovers on the day, but besides the lopsided shooting numbers there aren't too many tea leaves to be deciphered in the post-game box score. Ultimately the Red Dragons just played solid team defense and the Wildcats also had a tough shooting night.

Saturday's game included the debut of junior forward Quayshaun Mitchell (New York, N.Y. / High School for Graphic Communication & Arts). The 6-foot-4 transfer was unsurprisingly limited in minutes after just recently joining the team, but made his presence felt by drawing two charges in the game.

The Wildcats will hit the road next, traveling to York College on Tuesday for a 7 pm game.
