Men’s Basketball Shoots Way to Blowout Victory, 84-58 over Wells College

AURORA, N.Y. – If there's one area the SUNY Poly Men's Basketball Team (2-2, 1-0 NEAC) has struggled with in the early part of the season, it's offense. While one might expect incremental improvements in trouble areas, on Saturday the SUNY Poly Team showed their predilection for more of a "tidal shift" approach to change, as the Wildcats shot a blistering 67% from the field on their way to a NEAC rout of Wells.

To put things in perspective, the Wildcats missed just 15 shots all game. In the team's season-opening loss to Hamilton, they missed more than that in the first half.

Leading the way for SUNY Poly was a breakout performance by rookie guard Ryan McCarthy (Camden, N.Y. / Camden). McCarthy scored 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting, which included a deadeye 7-for-8 from 3-point range.

McCarthy had shown promise as a pure shooter in the Wildcats' first few games, but had yet to put together a truly great shooting performance. But on Saturday the freshman was on fire – his 28 points are second this season only to the 33 points of point guard Maverick Hodge (Bronx, N.Y. / Samuel Gompers) in the Wildcats' overtime loss to Utica.

Hodge had a terrific game on Saturday as well, finishing behind McCarthy with 19 points while dishing out a team-best 7 assists.

Junior Kaleel Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.  / Syr. Acad. of Science) also played well, just missing what would have been a second consecutive double-double. The 6-3 forward finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

The Wildcats took most of the suspense out of the game early, going up 45-28 at the half and out scoring the Express 39 to 30 after that. Credit the team's ball movement with the hot shooting performance, as the 'Cats recorded 19 assists as a team.

SUNY Poly will look to stay undefeated in league play tomorrow as they travel to Keuka for a 3 pm matchup.
