Barrage of 3-Pointers Propels SUNYIT Past Cortland 75-68

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT men's basketball team hit 10 3-pointers and had three players score at least 20 points to take down the visiting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons 75-68 in non-conference action at the Campus Center Gymnasium Saturday.  The Wildcats improved to 3-7 overall (2-2 NEAC), while Cortland fell to 2-6 on the year.

Junior Clint Foster (Candor, NY/North Country CC) hit six of the team's 10 baskets from beyond the arc, including four in the second half, where SUNYIT shot 52 percent from the field.  Along with their hot shooting, the Wildcats took care of the ball, committing only six turnovers in the contest.

With the game tied at nine apiece after six minutes of action, SUNYIT would build a nine-point lead over the next nine minutes of play and settle into halftime up six, 32-26.

Cortland rallied early in the second half, coming back to tie the game at 38 with 15:25 left in the contest, but a 3-pointer by Foster on SUNYIT's next possession put the Wildcats right back up three. The Wildcats would never look back from there, building a double-digit lead over the next six minutes and not letting Cortland get any closer than five points down from that point to seal the victory.

Foster finished with 20 points, while senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) finished with game highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and two blocks.  Senior Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) scored 22 points and grabbed 11 boards, while fellow classmate Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) dished out a game-high seven assists and scored seven points.

Sophomore Harrison Hefele scored 18 points for Cortland, while freshman Kevin McMahon chipped in 17 points.

The Wildcats will return to action after the holiday break when they host NEAC rival Gallaudet University on Saturday, January 8.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
