Dominant Pitching Helps Wildcats Blank Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The SUNYIT baseball team allowed a total of five hits while putting 11 runs on the board to sweep NEAC rival Penn State Harrisburg during a doubleheader Sunday, winning game one 6-0 and game two 5-0.  The Wildcats have now won four straight and are 4-0 in the NEAC West Division* and 11-9 overall, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 2-2 in the NEAC West and 2-21 overall.

The Wildcats held the Lions' offense in check with some dominant pitching in both games, as sophomore Michael Rose (Chatham, NY/Hudson Valley CC) pitched a three-hit, complete game shutout while striking out four batters in game one, while junior Anthony Surber (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) threw a one-hitter in five innings of work during game two.  Junior Anthony Osorio (Amsterdam, NY/Fulton-Montgomery CC) then pitched a scoreless sixth inning and senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) closed out the game with two strikeouts in the seventh to clinch the sweep.

Surber also had strong day at the plate, going 3-for-5 on the day with a double, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base.  Sophomore John LeClair (Mohawk, NY/Cortland State) also had a big day, finishing 5-for-8 with three runs scored, two doubles, an RBI and three stolen bases, while junior Michael McCrone (Whitney Point, NY/Hudson Valley CC) drove in three runs on two hits and extended his hit streak to 11 games.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when they host local rival Utica College for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.  Due to the on-campus construction of both the $20 million field house and the new Wildcat baseball field, SUNYIT will play this and all other home games this season at the Larry DeLutis Field in Rome, NY.  Directions can be found here.

*Beginning with the 2010 season, North Atlantic Conference (NAC) members Castleton, Husson, Lyndon State, Maine-Farmington and Thomas will play in the NEAC as associate members in the East Division.  Each division will hold a championship and the two divisional champions will meet for a three-game series to determine the conference champion.  The conference winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
